Morphology and Evolution of Cobweb Spider Male Genitalia (araneae, Theridiidae)
This study elucidates the homology of elements of the male palps in the spider family Theridiidae. We survey and illustrate 60 species from 29 out of the 86 currently recognized genera representing all subfamilies. The study is buttressed by a phylogenetic framework, and uses a new method to evaluate critically competing homology hypotheses based on various criteria. Among the classic criteria ...
متن کاملRapid Divergent Evolution of Genitalia
The evolutionary forces responsible for the evolution of animal genitalia have a long history of controversy. Why the special interest in genitalia? In addition to the intrinsic interest of organs that are so intimately related to reproduction and fi tness, it is because of a classic property of genital evolution: the morphological forms of genitalia are often speciesspecifi c, and these forms ...
متن کاملCoevolution between Male and Female Genitalia in the Drosophila melanogaster Species Subgroup
In contrast to male genitalia that typically exhibit patterns of rapid and divergent evolution among internally fertilizing animals, female genitalia have been less well studied and are generally thought to evolve slowly among closely-related species. As a result, few cases of male-female genital coevolution have been documented. In Drosophila, female copulatory structures have been claimed to ...
متن کاملGrowth and Development of Male External Genitalia
Results: Testes did not show any increase in size until theonsetofpubertyat age11years,whereaspenilegrowth was gradual after birth. However, both penile and testicular development demonstrated peak growth from 12 to 16 years of age, which coincided with the maximal male pubertal growth spurt. Data indicate an earlier pubertal development for this study population than that for a similar populat...
متن کاملInvolvement of male genitalia in leprosy.
Four hundred and sixty-seven male patients with leprosy were screened for genital involvement. Genital lesions were observed in 6.6% of all male cases of leprosy. They were seen most frequently in lepromatous leprosy (25.8%), followed by borderline lepromatous (13.3%) and borderline tuberculoid (1.4%) leprosy.
